"My name is Ahmad Issa and I have been on Ohio's death row for the last 21 years. I have been claiming my innocence since I was arrested in 1997. At the time I couldn't speak much English and didn't know anything about the law. I was given court appointed attorneys, and they wouldn't listen to me. All they worried about was saving my life, they didn't care about my innocence. They didn't do a good job at all and I blame them for spending the last 21 years of my life on death row for something I didn't do. Recently the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals listened to me and vacated my conviction and my sentence, and ordered the state to try me within 180 days or let me go. That is the reason that I am asking the good people of this country to help me raise funds to hire an attorney to fight for me, and try to get me out of this predicament. Help an innocent man prove his innocence. I really do appreciate your help." He adds, "The state stated that another person supposedly paid me to find someone to commit the crime; she testified at her trial and denied that she and I had anything to do with this crime,  and was found not guilty, but my state appointed attorneys never called her to testify at my trial. The 6th Circuit Judge mentioned when they threw out my conviction that in his opinion, this was just one of the things that these attorneys did that was ineffective."

My name is Jen Holland. I began corresponding with Ahmad Issa through Death Row Support Project when I volunteered to be a pen pal. From our first correspondence in the summer of 2018, Ahmad said that he was not guilty of the crime he was convicted of. In September 2018, a court agreed with him. You can read the news report here, more information on his appeal here, and another interesting article about how the defense attorneys neglected to address cultural considerations in his original case here

Ahmad is hoping to find a lawyer that will take his case on a pro bono basis, but he has asked me to help him with a fundraiser to raise legal fees so that he will be adequately represented this time. If he is released without being retried (which is the ideal outcome!), he will need the money to help him get back home to Jordan. Please consider contributing to Ahmad's legal fund so that this innocent man can finally be free!
