72 Weeks running

Kia is a loving father and a kindhearted man. He worked in childcare for 14 years and had a dream of starting his own daycare, a dream he achieved in September 2015 shortly after the birth of his daughter.

In April 2016 a young child in his care choked on milk caused by a spasm in her airway and stopped breathing. Kia initiated CPR right away and the baby was rushed to the hospital by paramedics. The doctors discovered she had a series of injuries and complications and in the end tragically she didn’t recover. An unfathomable outcome that fills us all with tremendous sadness. What the State has alleged as an intentional act to harm the child has been refuted by medical experts to be related to brittle bone disease, improper CPR and intubation by medical personnel and ultimately an inability for oxygen flow to be restored in time.

Kia, who has no prior record of any kind and who is the primary caretaker of his own healthy children, was accused of causing her harm. A few days later he was violently arrested and thrown in jail with a bond of $2 million that his family could not afford. He spent 13 months in jail, he missed his baby girl’s first birthday and the birth of his son. Despite being accused of such terrible crimes that he absolutely did not commit, he remained steadfast in his faith in justice and in his compassion for people.

Kia faced a three week trial in September 2017 and at the end the jury was unable to unanimously agree on any charge against him. His wife who is my dearest friend, her parents, and his parents and family pooled all their resources to ensure his innocence would be proven and his freedom irrevocably restored. Now the State of Maryland has chosen to set new trial dates to attempt to have him convicted for a second time!!

The cost of private legal counsel and expert testimony is alot but between contributions from Sadia and Kia’s parents we are already halfway there- we have two weeks left to raise the rest!

I know each of you have helped before, that times are tough and we all have our own needs and priorities. But I believe in our common humanity and in our pursuit for justice, most of all I know we want to ensure that Kia stays home with his wife and kids and that the grief, pain and hardship they have all endured can be ended for good. I believe without a doubt that if it were me in this situation that Sadia and Kia would stop at nothing to help me- so I am doing the same and asking you to join me!
