#FreeMaya faces FELONY charges, 7 years in prison, for a SILENT protest in support of immigrants! She was grabbed, dragged down the stairs, arrested, and jailed overnight by the University of Chicago police. She's also banned by the University of Chicago!

Dear Friend,

We live in a time when standing up for what is right is crucial and also carries dangers.  Those who come under attack in the course of this have to be supported and defended.  In this spirit we are asking you to donate financially to the legal defense of Maya, a member of the Revolution Club who faces serious felony charges of Battery on a Police officer and resisting arrest.

On March 1 Maya took part in 11 minutes of silence together with people across the country in an action called by Refuse Fascism to stand with the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are now being terrorized in an escalating ethnic cleansing by the Trump/Pence regime.

She, together with three other members of the Revolution Club, walked into the University of Chicago student center dining hall, held up sheets of paper announcing 11 minutes of silence for 11 million undocumented immigrants and stood silently for 11 minutes. Almost the entire dining hall fell silent. The Revolution Club thanked all who participated, gave them ways to learn more and get further involved, and headed towards the exit. At the exit, they were stopped by police who then attacked Maya, grabbing her and literally dragging her down a set of stairs and out of the building.

Since last spring Maya has been volunteering with the Revolution Club Chicago project. Throughout the year the Revolution Club has been working in some of the most disparaged and demeaned areas of Chicago where they have been harassed, attacked and arrested by the police for exercising, and encouraging the people to exercise basic rights which are supposedly guaranteed.  This very history of police harassment and attack was used by the Assistant State’s Attorney to politically target Maya at what should have been a routine bail hearing.  The repressive power of the state—in close cooperation with the University—is being brought to bear against someone who was peacefully protesting the ongoing raids against and attacks on immigrants. This same university is bending over backwards to give Steve Bannon not just a large platform but the intellectual legitimization afforded by that platform.

What is being done now to immigrants is nothing short of ethnic cleansing and there is a clear message in the attack on Maya that those trying to fight this will be silenced. I am a revolutionary and a follower of Bob Avakian, the leader of the revolution and architect of the new synthesis of communism. I see joining in this struggle to drive out Trump/Pence fascist regime as part of working for an actual revolution, because a system that rips children from their parents’ arms at the border and cage them like dogs, a system that has over 15,0000 children held in concentration camps in unimaginable, gut-wrenching conditions, and who tear gas babies at the border is a system that needs to be overthrown!

I fight for a world without borders, a world where no more will anyone be considered “illegal”, a world where women are seen as full human beings, Black and Brown people are not shot down or mass incarcerated, and a world where the people are caretakers of the planet.

NO! I will not be silenced while this system continues to attack immigrants or anyone this system considers less than human. As Bob Avakian, the leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party says in the Q&A of his crucial talk, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America—A Better World IS Possible in speaking about what it is going to take to protect those who are vulnerable to attack by this system, “Other people have to get involved, other people... who are not directly affected in this or that thing, including deportations, have to take the stand that this is intolerable and we won’t allow it.” And he also goes on to say, “We cannot protect people from what the people in power are intending to do to them, other than by driving out the people in power.”

YOU ARE NEEDED! If you abhor the way that immigrants are being demonized, terrorized and incarcerated, and deported, then regardless of your political stance, you need to support and defend this case, and like I did on March 1, take the stand that what is happening to immigrants is intolerable!
