On April 9, 2017, David Haigh was physically assaulted while visiting New York City with friends. This assault resulted in the death of David’s attacker. During this attack, David received numerous injuries, including cuts, lacerations and bruises to his face, several human bites to his head, and a human bite to his hand which crushed the bone, and lead to infection.

David called 911 an hour prior to the attack when he began to feel fearful of the attacker. The NYPD never responded to the 911 call for help. David called 911 again after the physical assault had occurred, and stayed with the assailant until police, and medical personnel arrived.

David was rushed to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. During his hospital stay, the NYPD told David they believed he acted in self-defense, but then charged David with second degree murder. These charges are the result of, what many believe to be, a very sloppy and irresponsible investigation by the NYPD, and the district attorney’s office.

We have secured an attorney who has represented David throughout the pretrial phase of David’s case, but we have found it virtually impossible to fund the trial phase of David’s defense. A conviction on these charges would result in a sentence of 25 years to life for a man who, unlike his assailant, has never been in trouble with the law, and was clearly acting in self-defense.

We are reaching out to our family and friends in hopes of raising the $50,000 necessary to secure the attorney we have been using thus far. The evidence in the case clearly shows this was a case of self-defense. The family thanks you in advance of any donations you may make in anticipation of bringing David home.
