The politically correct secular world has finally reared its ugly head here in western Kentucky with the excommunication of a local congregation that insists on holding onto the Word as written in God’s holiest document, the Bible.  Prior to 2015, the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) stated that “For Christians, marriage is a covenant through which a man and a woman are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship” which corresponds with the Bibles numerous references to marriage.  Since 2015 though, the PCUSA has decided to do away with the “Christian” definition of marriage and simply define marriage as a “… unique commitment between two people …”  As a Christian organization, the First Presbyterian Church of Calvert City located at 639 Evergreen Street has rejected this purely secular definition and had requested a gracious dismissal from the denomination.  Rather than pursue an amicable separation though, the local Presbytery of the PCUSA has decided to excommunicate all members of the Calvert City congregation and seize all property and assets

Although this may appear to be an anti-alternate lifestyle letter, it isn’t.  We firmly believe in the right of individuals to enter into almost any type of civil relationship that they desire be it for commercial or civil purposes.  On the other hand, this is a land build on freedom of religion and that includes the right to repudiate secular practices within the church context.  Franklin Graham explains what is happening to the PCUSA with one word: apostasy.

Graham goes on to say on his Facebook page, “…In His Word, the Bible, God has already defined marriage, as well as sin, and we should obey that rather than looking for ways to redefine it according to the desires of our culture. Marriage is defined as between a man and a woman—end of discussion. Anything else is a sin against God, and He will judge all sin one day.”  As Paul instructed Timothy (2 Timothy 4:2-6), “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.  For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.  Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.  But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”

This funding page has been set up in order to fund the church's legal defense from the Presbytery of Western Kentucky.  Although our congregation is small, we consider the issue at hand to be of such a significance that we can't simply turn our backs and walk away.  That said, we don't have the financial means to conduct this battle on our own.  Please be assured that once our attorney fees have been paid, all excess funds will go to local charities.
