I plea with all of you to even the playing field of this two tier justice system. Here's my friend's story:
Fifteen years ago she left an abusive marriage after 17 years and three children. With her family in another state, her previous attempts to leave were fruitless because she had no job nor money. Her break came when her husband sent her and her children back to her parent's so he could take a job out of country. She had no intentions of going back to him.
While in her parent's home she was working two jobs to try to get back on her feet as a single mother. She was so elated when she was able to get her own place and she could finally provide the soft landing her children desperately needed. Her son was 16 years old and he was going to finally get his own room. Their joy was short lived. Unfortunately, her son never got to experience his new home or his own bedroom because of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Her son has been incarcerated for over a year without being convicted of a crime because she can't afford the bail or the legal costs. Ironically, another young adult with a similar charge is free on bail who now has the opportunity to walk around free, build a strong defense, and most importantly spend time with his family.
I plea for your assistance to support her son's constitutional right of being innocent until proven guilty. Because of her poverty status, her son does not have the same privileges that is entitled under law as to someone more affluent. Please help us release him from bail bondage and help with the astronomical legal fees.
