On May 11th, 2017, Anthony Paciorek was detained after arguing with admissions at Mott Community College. He was arrested after being told he was free to go, and is now facing disorderly conduct, trespassing, and resisting arrest charges. Help him now!

On May 11th, 2017, my partner Anthony Paciorek tried to register for classes at Mott Community College. He ended up being arrested instead.

A bit about Tony… Every day, he fights injustice as a water activist and social work major specializing in post disaster relief based in Flint, Michigan. He is currently working to help bring relief to the people of Flint from the ongoing water crisis there. His previous efforts have included travelling to Washington DC to represent Flint at Congressional Oversight Committee hearings and lobbying Congress, as well as lobbying members of the state legislature. He ran for city council this year, but failed to garner the number of necessary signatures by the deadline to be listed on the primary ballot.

He’s passionate about his activism, and about his schooling as well, with the exception of one subject: math. Tony has a math prerequisite that’s keeping him from graduating with two degrees from Mott. He tested into basic math, but worked incredibly hard and retook his placement test, earning him a new placement into Beginning Algebra. This semester, Tony was registering for classes late, the advisor placed him into a Beginning Algebra class and had Tony go get the approval of the instructor whose course he’d be taking (Mrs. Hughes) in order to register, as per Mott procedure. Mrs. Hughes signed off on the blue registration sheet enthusiastically; Tony then went to Registration to register for the first of two math classes that stand between him and his goal of graduating as a social worker.

However, this action was blocked by a different advisor who tried to make him take a lower level math course, this led to an argument resulting in Tony being arrested and detained for nearly 72 hours at the city jail. He’s now banned from campus pending a disciplinary review; all his hard work is in jeopardy. While he did raise his voice, at no point did he shout, or even drop the f-bomb. He got in an argument with an advisor, campus security was called, he asked if he was free to go, he was told he was, and then he was grabbed roughly by a different officer and detained. Even a week later, the bruises on his arm persist.

He's being charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing, and resisting arrest. These charges, especially the last two, are utterly bogus and a gross overreaction, and we need your help to fight them.

The lawyer that we’re choosing to go with is amazing, and he’s a shark – however, he’s also charging us $2000. Once we have the first $1000, he’ll take Tony’s defense on, and we can start making biweekly payments for the balance while he keeps Tony’s tail out of hot water.

Please, don’t let an argument over math ruin a life. Help us fight the system, and keep Tony free to fight for all of us!
